Cash Wasn’t a GSP… But He Stole Our Hearts Anyway

Some dogs make you wait for them.

That’s exactly how it felt when we went to pick up Cash. For the first time ever, there wasn’t a parking spot at the shelter. We waited. And somehow… it felt like it mattered.

Because some souls are worth waiting for.

The moment Cash leapt into the car—steady, self-assured—something shifted. He wasn’t just another hopeful face in need of a home. There was a quiet gravity to him, a sense that his story was layered, waiting to be revealed.

At first glance, we thought we had him figured out: a GSP mix, maybe five years old, another ordinary intake in a sea of hopefuls.

But as the days unfolded, so did the truth.

Cash isn’t his real name, and he’s a little older than we thought. He’s not a GSP at all—he’s a Burgos Pointer, a breed known for loyalty and deep companionship.

And it shows.

A brief stop to get coffee revealed what words couldn’t: Cash had known love before. He settled at our feet, patient and poised, eyes bright with mischief as he made a gentle play for a stray croissant. There was intelligence there, a playful spirit, and a sweetness that drew you in.

Yet not every chapter in his story glows with warmth. Some moments are edged with longing, shadowed by the ache of what was lost.

Later, as we took a stroll, we passed a sagging couch abandoned in an out-of-the-way place. It was impossible not to draw the parallel—how easily some lives, some hearts, are set aside when the world turns inconvenient.

Cash could have easily become just another forgotten story, another loss.

But instead, he stands before us—vibrant, hopeful, undiminished. Still eager to give his heart, still waiting for someone to recognize the quiet brilliance within him.
