From Tied To A Tree To Rescue: The Search For a GSP's Forever Home

Milo, a German Shorthaired Pointer, sat tied to a tree, wondering where his owner had gone. He sniffed at the rope, curious why his owner had grabbed it instead of the leash when they left the house. While cars drove by, Milo sat alone and watched for a familiar face to appear, waiting for a reunion with his person. No one knows how long he sat and waited before Parks and Recreation found him. He appeared abandoned, with no tags or microchip, and tied to a tree with a rope. The number of stray dogs had been increasing for several months, and David, the park manager, had developed a procedure for dealing with stray dogs like Milo.

In the face of a mounting crisis at the local shelter and the number of dogs being euthanized, David partnered with Selena. While David cared for and notified the local shelter of the stray dogs, Selena posted the found dogs on the internet and looked for anyone missing their dog. Once the search for the owners had been exhausted, Selena would reach out to rescues for assistance. However, she found many rescues overwhelmed and would politely ask for any resources they could offer. Fortunately, Milo was a German Shorthaired Pointer, and in Selena's search for a rescue to assist, she learned about California GSP Rescue.

Like many she previously sent, Selena's email included how Milo was found and what they had learned about him. She and David had educated themselves about the dog breeds and diligently ensured each dog would have the best opportunity and not be put to sleep. Her son, Ethan, shared in this mission, finding joy in assisting with dogs like Milo. Selena, Ethan, and David loved each dog that had come their way. They wished for and hoped for a rescue that wanted the same. Milo would be in good hands until California GSP Rescue could find his forever home.

The number of abandoned German Shorthaired Pointers, like Milo and other dogs, has risen sharply. This concerning phenomenon can often be traced back to a fundamental issue—people acquiring dogs without fully understanding the unique traits and requirements of the breeds they choose. Sadly, many focus solely on aesthetics, overlooking the reality of a breed's lifestyle demands. Regrettably, this lack of foresight often leads to poor decisions, like abandoning Milo in a park or surrendering a dog to an already full animal shelter.

California GSP Rescue is committed to ongoing education about the breed and is continually working to ensure the perfect home for Milo and the other GSP’s in our care. If you're ready to open your heart and home to Milo or another lively GSP, submit an adoption application. For those passionate about supporting Milo and the other GSP’s in our care and spreading awareness about the breed, we invite you to become a Rescue Hero. If adoption or financial support isn't feasible for you, be a vital part of the solution by sharing this post. Your actions matter, and together, we can find Milo a loving home and prevent the heartbreak of abandonment for other GSP’s. Be a part of their journey; be a part of the solution.
