In Loving Memory Of The Bear
Bear, a 6 year old handsome male GSP mix was turned into a shelter due to a leg injury where the owners could not afford his surgery. Unfortunately, his back right leg had to be removed, but Bear has no idea he was a tripod. He acted like a normal dog with all four legs!
Bear even at 6 had some energy, but nowhere near the energy of a young GSP. We knew with love, daily walks, and some training, Bear would thrive. We knew he would show someone what an incredible dog he was, even with three legs, and appreciate a chance at a life as part of a family in a loving home.
Bear caught the eye of Deborah and her husband. They had two Golden Doodles, and in 2022, they adopted Bear, and he became known as "The Bear". The Bear began living his best life as a Doodle dog. He loved his new life and being a tripod was not ever even an issue that came up in his life. Once he settled in, he began to be a great companion for their dogs and just a good dog for the humans.
We recently received the sad news that The Bear has passed away. It is our privilege as a rescue to work with such wonderful and thoughtful adopters such as Deborah and her husband. We know that “The Bear” could have not be in better hands than theirs, and they gave him a great life.
“The Bears Story
Our family grew by a Bear in January 2022. We had three golden doodles - two of which were brother and sister, and we had lost our boy Bo in 2020. Bella was 12, Maizey, also a rescue, had her own things going on, and one of them was separation anxiety, so we figured we’d find someone who needed a home that was about the same age. Maizey would have a buddy when Bella crossed the rainbow bridge - so enters The Bear.
We picked up The Bear at the rescue just after New Years, and drove back to our river house where we were for the holidays. Being a rescue - and caged - no one could tell us if he was kennel trained, house broken, or anything, so we decided to wing it. We blocked off our front room and I was going to sleep on the couch there with The Bear, hoping that he’d let me know what he needed. After having to take the bone from him - he is sooo loud, thus The Bear name - so we both could get some sleep, he passed out cold, snoring so loudly - also keeping me awake - it made us realize this may have been the first time in quite some time he was in a cozy dog bed and out of the elements in quite some time! If I recall correctly he was at the CAGSP rescue for well over a year. No big surprise. Did I mention he is half lab, oh, and only has three legs??? So the odds were a bit against him to get adopted as a hunting pup! Anyway, back to our first night. At around 4am I feel him starting to bite on my arm, but soooo gently, then he started to tug my arm. Our boy Bear woke me up to let him out to do his business!
A few things about The Bear:
He LOVED just chilling out and soaking up the sun!
He LOVED nap time!
He LOVED hanging with his sisters!
Anyway, The Bear was quite the gentleman and wrapped himself up right in the middle of our family. He had NO idea he was missing a leg, and would lick you to death if you let him. He was diagnosed with LarPar a couple years ago, and while we did all we could during that time, it was just time to let him move on to a better place, so now he is hanging out with Bella and her brother Bo whom he never met, but I am sure the boys are getting along nicely - being the gentlemen they both were.
As for the rescue - if you have a chance, open your heart and your home, and let one of these pups live their best lives with you”!
Best,
Deborah
