OB Is Adopted!
OB came to us as a young dog after being relinquished by his owner, who was no longer able to manage him and had allowed some bad habits to develop. He had lived with the same family from puppy hood until coming into the care of California GSP Rescue.
Despite the challenges, it was clear from the beginning that OB had tremendous potential.
His family had spent time training him, and OB was an incredibly intelligent dog. He was every bit as sweet as he was handsome. He walked beautifully on a leash, was house trained, listened well, and knew an impressive list of commands, including “sit,” “down,” “shake,” and “stay.”
OB even knew some pretty special tricks. He had been taught to “go around” a pole or tree, could go through hula hoops, turn in a circle, and understood “this way” when he needed to change direction while walking on lead.
But even with all of that potential, OB had some challenges that needed the right person and the right environment.
He could clear a six-foot fence, needed to be an only dog, and had some protective behaviors that required an experienced, confident handler.
When OB first came to us, though, what we saw most was the very good boy underneath it all.
He was as sweet as could be. He loved attention, walked well on leash, was always happy, and seemed to have a permanent wagging tail.
We knew that with the right confident owner—someone who understood him, could provide structure, and would continue to guide him—OB could truly thrive.
Then came Kari.
OB’s Journey: From Waiting to Thriving
Kari was a previous California GSP Rescue adopter who understood what it meant to love a dog with challenges. After losing her beloved Hachiko, who also needed a confident and experienced leader, Kari was ready to open her heart and home again.
When she applied to adopt, we immediately thought of OB.
OB had waited so long for the right home. And we had confidence that Kari was the kind of person who could manage just about any dog, regardless of their challenges.
Sometimes, the right dog and the right person simply find each other.
And for OB, that’s exactly what happened.
After waiting years for the person who truly understood him, OB finally found his forever home.
Today, he is living, thriving, and exactly where he belongs.
His journey is a beautiful reminder that sometimes a dog doesn't need to be changed into a different dog. They simply need someone who understands them, believes in them, and knows how to bring out the very best in who they already are.
OB waited for his person—and Kari was worth the wait.
Here is Kari’s update:
“OB has officially become part of our family and we couldn’t be happier with how quickly he’s adjusted to his forever home. Every day we learn more about his personality and he provides us with laughs and entertainment.
One thing we’ve been working on since day one was a “sleep-startle” issue we knew OB dealt with prior to adopting him. If startled awake OB has the potential to snap back out of fear/confusion. Through a little trial and error and simple modifications we moved his bed further away in our room so when I get up during the night it wouldn’t rouse him from sleep. It has worked wonders and everyone is sleeping peacefully through the night!
OB has been an eager pupil during training and catches on quickly. He’s a smart boy and picks things up quickly. I’m also happy to report that he absolutely loves his new veterinarian, and the feeling is mutual. His vet quickly became a fan and seeing him so relaxed and comfortable during his visits has been another encouraging sign of how well he's adjusting.
One of the best surprises has been how warmly he's welcomed visiting family and friends. He greets everyone with more excitement than uncertainty. Watching him build trust, make new friends, and enjoy being part of every gathering has been incredibly rewarding.
Of course, no update would be complete without mentioning his ongoing love-hate relationship with the resident squirrel and lizards in the backyard. OB takes his squirrel-monitoring and lizard-chasing duties very seriously, while the squirrel and lizards seem equally committed to keeping him entertained. Their daily standoffs and chases never fail to make us laugh.
We've also discovered that OB is quite the conversationalist. If he feels he's not getting enough attention, he'll happily let us know. He definitely has a lot to say and isn't shy about sharing his opinions, which has become one of our favorite parts of getting to know his personality.
We are so thankful that OB found his way to us. It has been so fun watching him adjust to life in his forever home, work through challenges, make friends, learn tricks and continue to show us his silly loving personality. OB is no longer just adjusting, he’s family.
