Rose Is Adopted!

Rose, a 3 month old adorable female German Shorthaired Pointer Mix was surrendered along with her siblings to the shelter by their owner. As we learned more about Rose, we found her to be a sweet and loving girl who was all puppy! Being a GSP Mix, she was much easier to manage than a 3 month old purebred GSP, but just like any young puppy, Rose would still need a family who would provide her with daily walks, stimulation games, playtime and training.

Delanie and Jordan applied to adopt a female dog around 3 months old. They had two other dogs, Benny, a Frenchie Poodle Mix, and a Boston Terrier named Luke. They also had 6 cats. Delanie and Jordan weren’t too concerned about the cats, as they knew how to manage it with their other dogs, and the cats always have had a safe space to retreat, if need be.

Delanie worked as a dog groomer for 8 years, and also worked at a veterinary hospital, and was familiar with many different breeds and their behaviors. Cute story: While working as a dog groomer, Delanie met her husband Jordan who was working at the same store, as a reptile and fish specialist. They both have different careers now, but we love that they bonded together because of their love for animals.

While they had never had a GSP, they were experienced with big dogs. Jordan grew up with Brittany Spaniels, and together they had a lab/pit mix who passed away a few years ago, and were ready for another large dog, and the energy a young GSP brings. They were excited to bring a dog home who could accompany them on hikes and camping trips.

They were open to a mix, and wanted a young female to balance their pack. We introduced them to Rose, a beautiful GSP Mix, and they fell in love with her. They brought Benny and Luke out to meet Rose, and everyone did great!

Rose has been in her new home for a couple of months now, and things could have not gone better! They have shared some updates and photos with us of Rose, now known as Beru in her new home.

First Day

“Hi! I wanted to give an update!

She got a bath and settling very nice! I think Jordan is naming her Beru (Star Wars names). Luke is Luke Skyterrier and Benny is named after Ben Kenobi lol! Greg was awesome to work with all the dogs meeting!

She also does not care about our cats so that’s good

She did very well her first night with us! She stayed in her kennel and didn’t make a peep until morning when she had to go potty which she did #1 & #2! She hasn’t made any mess in the house and getting along very well with the dynamic of the atmosphere so far! My cats seem to not care about her too much at all, and she knows to stay away if they seem timid. She loves to cuddle and has met my parents and seems to settle nicely!

I read all the paperwork on acclimating her and gave copies to my step dad and mom to go over as well.

We’re going to get a DNA test and see what’s going on in there lol. I’m very curious to know what the dad was! Greg said maybe Brittany spaniel, which would be totally awesome because I wanted a GSP and Jordan wanted a Brittany since he grew up with them. So that would be cool”!

One week Update

“Hi Teri!

She’s doing great! She had a bit of upset tummy for a day or two but I’m sure was from stress and food transitioning. We mixed her food with some rice and pumpkin and she’s feeling much better!

We took her into our vet for a checkup and fecal test and just get her acclimated with our doctor, and everyone said she is a beautiful healthy dog.

Benny absolutely loves having her around. They play and chase each other. He finally has someone that can keep up with him! We don’t let them play with toys yet, they both get very territorial and snappy. So we’re easing that in.

We also got a furniture kennel for them, with plenty of space and room. Although they barely use it since we’re home a lot. We’ve taken her with us to a few places, she is so well behaved and mellow. We love it”!

One Month Update

“It is hard to believe it has already been a month since we officially adopted Rose, now known as Beru! She has transitioned into our home so naturally, and it feels like she has always been part of the pack. We wanted a name to fit our Star Wars theme joining her brothers Luke Skyterrier, our 12 year old Boston Terrier, and Benny, our 2 year old Frenchie Poodle mix. She responded to the name Beru almost immediately!

For anyone considering adopting this breed, we have found that consistency and keeping her mind busy are key. Adding a puppy with German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) energy was exactly what our household needed. She definitely has those typical puppy needs like lots of playtime and plenty of enrichment, but she is also incredibly quick to learn. We have been focusing on positive reinforcement and establishing a solid routine, which helped her settle in much faster than we expected.

One of the most rewarding parts of this month was managing the introductions with our other pets. We have noticed she is a bit of a toy hoarder and likes to keep things to herself, but while being monitored, we have seen her and Benny play tug o war together! We try to keep the intensity at a level that isn't scary, and it has actually helped Benny open up and be more gentle. At the same time, she is very intuitive with our senior dog, Luke. She looks up to him and is very respectful whenever she is near him. Even our cats have been at ease since her debut because she is curious but does not bother them.

Beru is a world class cuddler who is always ready for bed by 9 pm. While we are still working through house training, she is doing very well with the circumstances and is mastering basic commands quickly. We have fallen in love with her personality and are so happy to have Beru in our lives!

We got Beru’s (ROSE) DNA results back today! It’s a doozy! Lol She is about 40% GSP mixed with a few other breeds, but she is 100% perfect”!

Xoxo,

Delanie
