Dakota
Dakota is a gorgeous 2 year old liver roan female German Shorthaired Pointer.
Dakota was labeled “dangerous” and nearly lost her life because she killed 19 chickens. When the shelter called California GSP Rescue, we knew there had to be more to the story. Dakota is a German Shorthaired Pointer—a bird dog with a strong prey drive. That instinct can be a problem in the wrong home, but it does not make her a bad dog. In the right hands, with guidance and understanding, it becomes a vibrant part of her spirit—something to be channeled, not condemned.
While she needs a little work on a leash, (what GSP doesn’t), she rides quietly in the car. In fact during transport, the only time she made a sound was to politely let them know she needed a bathroom break.
What surprises us most is Dakota’s gentle ease with people and her canine companions. In her first days with us, she strolled quietly among the pack, explored the dog park with a calm curiosity, and chased a Frisbee with a joy that seemed to erase the past.
Dakota is not the right fit for everyone. She will need an adopter who can give her the exercise, training, and structure she needs—and preferably no chickens. But for the right person, Dakota could be the perfect dog.
The Basics
Gender: Female
Age: 2
Dogs: Good with well mannered, socialized dogs
Good with Cats: Unknown
Kids: Unknown
The Good Stuff:
Loves people and is very affectionate, sweet and friendly
Very smart and trainable
Loves to play and chase a Frisbee
Rides well in a car
Enjoys spending time with other dogs
Walks pretty well on a leash, but will pull when excited
The Challenges:
Needs an active home as she is a young GSP, so daily exercise and training is a must. No days off
It is unknown if Dakota is house trained - we presume she is not, so she will need to be house trained in a new environment so she can learn the routine. However she did let her transporters know in the car when she needed to go to the bathroom.
While she likes being with other dogs in the field, she gets a little uncomfortable when other dogs get too close when she is lying down
Dakota has a strong prey drive. No chickens or small animals
Needs a little work on leash training
What our volunteers are saying about Dakota:
Not too interested in the ball, but did enjoy chasing a frisbee when one of the other dogs chased it, but only a few times
Very good going in field with everyone at gate
Did well playing with the other dogs
Very sweet and affectionate
