Doozie
Doozie is a little over a year old, full of puppy energy, and quite happy to stand close enough to lean against you. We hadn't had him out of the shelter long before we realized we had another Velcro dog on our hands.
He was picked up as a stray and went unclaimed before coming to California GSP Rescue. The sounds outside the shelter made him a little unsure at first, but he was soon exploring, enjoying a pup cup, and looking for attention. On the ride back with Ivy, Olive, and Cowboy, Doozie wanted to be up front near Greg. You can see his first day with us in Doozie's video.
Doozie needs an active person or family who will make exercise and training part of every day. He enjoys getting out on a long line, where he has room to sniff and explore while staying connected to his handler. He's also very interested in treats, which should come in handy as he works on his manners. If you have time for a young GSP and want a dog who likes being included, we'd like you to meet him.
The Basics
Gender: Male, neutered
Age: About 1 year
Dogs: Great. Has played well with dogs at the rescue;
Good with Cats: Interested but low prey drive; introductions and supervision will still be needed
Kids: Hasn’t met any yet
The Good Stuff
Affectionate and likes staying close to his people
Has been friendly with familiar and unfamiliar adults
Has walked and spent time in the field with other dogs
Enjoyed playing with Olive and wanted to play with Doc
Likes treats, giving his adopter something useful to work with during training
Enjoys sniffing and exploring on a long line
Has ridden well in the car
Has shown he can settle and lie down after activity
The Challenges
Young GSP energy: Doozie will need daily exercise, mental stimulation, and consistent training. His adopter should have time for more than a quick walk around the block.
Leash manners: He pulls on walks and needs practice walking without pulling.
Wanting attention: Volunteers have noted barking for attention.
House training: His house-training status is unknown. Plan: Establish a routine and help him learn the rules in his new home.
Health history: Good. The shelter evaluated a skin lesion near his left knee; testing was consistent with inflammation from injury.
What our volunteers are saying about Doozie:
Mike describes him as very energetic and says he'll need someone committed to exercising him.
Sydney noted that he's a good boy, loves treats, and pulls while walking.
Greg watched him walk with Emily, Doc, and Oliver, show interest in playing with Doc, and later lie down calmly in the field.
During his first day out, Greg quickly noticed how much Doozie wanted to stay close to him.
