Maddie

You're not seeing things at all. Maddie is absolutely on the California GSP Rescue website. To be absolutely clear, Maddie is not a GSP. She's not even a GSP mix. She's a 12 year old female Chihuahua mix and has quite comfortably fitted in with the larger dogs.

Maddie came to us with Callie (a senior GSP) when their owner was going overseas that very day. We'd been planning to look after Callie, but Maddie needed a place to go as well. We couldn't just leave her without a home. While both of the dogs were adopted and lived together, we found out they could go to separate homes.

Since then Maddie has been very busy showing us what a lovely little companion she is. She's sweet and playful, she follows her people around and wants to be right by your side. There's a little hop at mealtimes. Dinner obviously deserves a celebration!

Maddie was by far the smallest dog we'd ever had at Splish Splash. We actually gave her her own pen at the start to prevent her getting trampled on. Once she'd joined the group she was absolutely brilliant with the other dogs. Smallest guest? Yes. Lost in the crowd? Not a chance.

Maddie enjoys being at the house, and we are looking for someone who will make her part of everyday life, with plenty of company, attention, and care. You may have come here looking for a German Shorthaired Pointer but Maddie would appreciate your consideration.

The Basics

Gender: Female

Age: 12 years

Breed: Chihuahua mix

Dogs: Has done well with other dogs, including large dogs; needs companions who respect her space

Good with Cats: Fine with cats

Kids: Unknown

The Good Stuff:

  • Sweet and playful

  • Likes to follow her people and stay close

  • Comfortable around big dogs

  • Did wonderfully with the other dogs at Splish Splash

  • Hops in excitement at mealtime

  • Received dental care

  • Crate trained

The Challenges:

Maddie is comfortable around larger dogs, but she does have boundaries. Volunteers have seen her correct dogs who bother her, including snapping at one who was pestering her. Her new family should supervise introductions and make sure other dogs give her space.

She can use a doggy door and is pretty much house-trained. The owner should be prepared to help her settle into a routine in her new home.

At 12 she'll need a family who are committed to looking after a smaller older dog and who are going to be able to meet her needs if she's to have a long and healthy life.

What our volunteers are saying about Maddie:

  • “So sweet and playful, wants to be right by your side.”

  • “Tail wagging, comfortable around big dogs.”

  • She follows her person around and isn’t bothered by bigger dogs.

  • Her Foster describes her as “a joy, a complete delight.”

If you're looking for a little companion who wants to be close then Maddie might well be your girl. She's already established herself in the GSPs. We'd love to help her find her place in a family. Please apply here.
