Atlas
Atlas is fluent in the language of companionship—she heels, sits, stays, offers her paw, and rolls over with an effortless grace. But what this striking three-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer truly longs for now is someone who can give her the gift of time, and a life shared beyond commands.
With her white and liver-ticked coat, Atlas is a portrait of energy and elegance, shaped by a life of running, hiking, biking, and chasing after a well-loved ball. Yet, for all her adventures, her heart belonged to one simple joy: being close to her person. When the hours in her crate grew long and her longing turned to anxious waiting, her owner made the difficult call to California GSP Rescue, hoping for a new chapter.
We have seen plenty to love about Atlas. On her first outing with us, she was good on a leash and spent much of a park visit off leash (see Ivy’s video). At Splish Splash, she spent the early part of the event running around the pool and playing with everyone. Once she was tired, she wanted love and attention. Our volunteers have also watched her play with Gunnar and enjoy rolling in wet, green grass.
We're looking for an active individual or family to provide daily exercise, training, companionship and a considered plan for her separation anxiety. Someone who works from home or is retired would be ideal provided they can meet those requirements. Atlas has a lot to offer someone who is willing to make that commitment.
The Basics
Gender: Female, spayed
Age: 3 years
Dogs: Has done well with dogs at the rescue and at Splish Splash
Good with Cats: Lived with three cats, but will need time to adjust to unfamiliar cats
Kids: Reported good with older children
The Good Stuff
Well trained, with a long list of familiar commands
Good on and off a leash
Strong recall
Enjoys running, hikes, and playing ball
Has enjoyed playing with other dogs
Good in the car
House-trained and crate-trained
Seeks love and attention after playtime
The Challenges
Separation anxiety: Atlas struggles when left alone. She needs a home that can accommodate this and someone committed to helping her, rather than leaving her alone for a full workday.
Food and bones around other dogs: Her former owner reported food & toy aggression with other dogs.
Fences: She reportedly jumped a four-foot fence. Secure containment and supervision are important.
Daily activity: Atlas is an active young GSP who needs regular exercise, mental stimulation, training, and time with her people.
What our volunteers are saying about Atlas:
Good on a leash and easier to handle than many GSPs her age
Played with Gunnar and did well in the pool yard
Loves rolling in wet, green grass and wants to run
Spent hours playing at Splish Splash, then wanted love and attention
