Cinder Is Adopted!

Cinder’s story began in a remote shelter, where the days blurred together and hope felt distant. But thanks to the dedication of California GSP Rescue volunteers, her world shifted. Each person became a link in the chain that led her out of confinement and into possibility, meeting halfway to carry her toward a new beginning.

The moment Cinder stepped out of the car, it was unmistakable: there was something quietly extraordinary about her.

Cinder is the kind of dog who soaks up the world with every sense—sweet, sharp, and endlessly curious. She comes alive outdoors, weaving through the brush and letting the wind carry new stories to her nose. On a recent hike, she moved through the canyon with a quiet joy, returning with the scent of sage clinging to her coat and a spark in her eyes. It’s the kind of simple joy that German Shorthaired Pointers live for.

Nate applied with us to find a female companion. While he didn’t ever have a GSP, his Uncle had 2 GSP’s, and he was intrigued by them, and thought a GSP would be a good fit for his lifestyle. He had horses, and a trail down to the river, and he wanted a dog he could train to work on the property. Knowing GSP’s, they love to have a job, but also love to be a companion, and that is exactly what Nate was hoping for.

We introduced Nate to Cinder, and it was a perfect match. He has taken Cinder, now known as Indiana to school where he teaches, and everyone has fallen in love with her. We have received some updates over the past couple of months that we wanted to share with you! As you can see from the photos below, Indiana is truly living her best life with Nate, and we couldn’t be happier for them both.

“Hey Greg and Teri!

First I would like to thank both of you for what you do for this breed and for how thorough you guys are on making sure the dogs go to a good home! I would like to let you know her new name which is Indiana! With very little training she is already answering to the name. She picks up on things quick, already started some basic training with her and she is responding well. She acclimated to her crate without issue. I put her to bed and she slept quietly all night.

She is super sweet. She is doing great! She got along with everyone at the school. All the students pet her.

She is definitely a bird dog. Hahahaha. She herded my neighbors rooster. No harm to the rooster btw. She wasn’t trying to bite or anything. Just playing. The rooster scrammed when I got it back over the fence.

She has some small issues with barking and has some separation issues, but she is already better this morning. Other than that. Easy dog.

She is not a barker other than when I leave her at the house. I have bought a smart bark collar that has many levels of warnings so I will be using that till he seems to stop that habit. She is definitely house trained. She paws at the door if she needs to go out which is great. Still working on the dog door. She doesn't like pushing through it but that will come with time. She has been enjoying the space running around in the front part of my back yard. When I take her in the back part it is full of brush right now so she is nose down searching around having a great time. She is skittish with the cows, but only if she gets within 5 ft it seems. She just keeps her distance which is good.

She is definitely starting to get attached to me. She loves to lay by me on the couch looking to see my every move. She has her independent moments, but that is mostly outside. She is eating and drinking fine, and zero issue with any of that. She has found my auto waterer outside on her own as well. I have a large dog run setup for her to be in when I'm gone from work that she does well in. Once I get the rest of the backyard dialed in she will have free roam of the yard while I'm gone. As far as chewing, I have not seen her doing anything naughty. She doesn't seem to have much interest in any chew toys so not to worried about that at the moment. I'm extremely happy with her. She is everything I could ask for!

I took her to my work and she did great with everyone and did fine by herself in the classroom. I also have brought her to basically every store with me since my town is extremely animal friendly! Besides a bit more leash training she is easy to bring around with me. This has been a great experience and will be recommending people that are a good fit to think about using you guys to find a dog.

Indiana is doing great! She has really settled in! We have our routine down now. She has started to show her ability to track with her nose and has started pointing which is very fun to watch. She really enjoys our late night walks after work. She does well as far as not engaging with other noisy dogs etc on the walks. She is much better on the leash now, but still needs some work but 2/3rds of the walk she is just walking next to me. She does great with everyone I have over. I had a poodle come over and they had a great time playing together for hours!

She has begun following me everywhere now no matter what I'm doing, which is a great way to have a companion. I have switched her food, she seems to be liking it a lot better. She seems to be at a much better weight now so I will be metering her food to maintain that weight. I was able to get a collar back on her instead of a harness. Now the harness is just for walks. Her barking has subsided other than the occasional normal dog stuff, but not the repeated barking when I am gone from home. I have already been able to discontinue the use of the bark collar which I'm happy about as I'm not a fan of those things. She is always very excited to see me when I come home which is a great feeling. She is extremely intelligent, picked up on stay commands already, trained her to wait for people to come through the door and only come inside after invited. She comes on call even outside on leash. She is also very derpy, likes to sleep upside down, and is a silly ball of fun. So I would say after week one, we still have a major success! I couldn't be happier.

Thanks again guys”!

One Month Update

“Adopting from CAGSP Rescue was  a very easy but thorough process. I appreciated the interview process as I felt I helped them select the perfect companion for me and my lifestyle. They gave me all the knowledge and resources I needed to get Indiana started in her new forever home.

When first meeting Indiana I knew she was a great dog right off the bat. Great temperament, sweet, already partially trained, which is exactly what i needed. Once I got her home, she melded into her routine within days. Within a week it was like she had been living with me for years!

She needed some leash training right away, but every walk yielded results and now she is a joy to take out. She loves to follow me around and hang out with me no matter what I'm doing around the house. Taking her to family functions and friends houses she does amazing with people and new environments. She has had several play dates with other dogs and does great!

Her activity levels are perfect for me, she's kind of like a light switch. She loves to chill and hang out, but once the leash comes out she turns into the energizer bunny and can just keep going. She doesn't terrorize the house. She is very polite, and her energy gets expelled through walks and runs or running around chasing lizards and smelling around my property.

Being my first GSP, I was a bit worried about some of the breeds specific needs, but those went out the window immediately. Being active already, and having her on a larger property, she gets plenty of exercise. If I don't, she knows how to tell me she needs more. I was concerned about shedding, but found with the right grooming tool. It is only a 3-5 min job every other day and it mitigates my concern of a fur covered house.

She has been such a great addition to my life and home. It is already hard to think about it without her. Coming home to a wagging ball of excitement has brought such great change. With everything going as well as it has, I would recommend this to anyone interested in this breed. I may even consider getting another one just so Indiana has a friend to be with all day!

Thank you for everything,

Nate and Indiana”
