Doozie Was Rescued, and We Quickly Learned He’s a Velcro Dog

Doozie Wants to be Close To You

Doozie had barely left the shelter before he started closing the gap between himself and the volunteer who picked him up.

This lovely German Shorthaired Pointer had been a stray picked up a few weeks previously and nobody had claimed him. He was just over a year old and had loads to look at when he went out on his freedom walk. He'd been in a kennel at the shelter for just under two weeks and the noise out there was quite a lot to take in initially. It didn't take long before we realized there was a very affectionate, young and inquisitive GSP underneath that first layer of apprehension.

A quick detour to a local coffee shop turned the day into something unexpectedly sweet. While the volunteer sipped his coffee, Doozie discovered the simple delight of a pup cup, his first taste of the good things that come with freedom.

Then came the seating arrangements.

On the way back, Greg still needed to collect Ivy, Olive, and Cowboy from Dr. Kang's office. That meant four dogs in a Honda Fit! After introductions, everyone settled into place. Ivy rode up front, while Doozie made it clear that being nearer to Greg sounded like an excellent idea.

GSP’s are known as Velcro dogs for a very good reason.

Later that week we did a little socializing with Doozie at the Rescue. Doozie went for a walk with some other dogs before playing in the field. Those introductions went well, an encouraging start as we learn more about him. Volunteer Mike was impressed, too, while pointing out something prospective adopters should understand: Doozie is young and has plenty of energy.

If you're considering a German Shorthaired Pointer, understand the daily commitment alongside the pets and snuggles. Doozie will need exercise, time outside to sniff and explore, consistent training, and time with his people. An active home ready to teach and include him could be a wonderful match.

The video also has some good news regarding four year old Ivy. At her exam Dr Kang suspected a food allergy was to blame for the eye irritation which is now resolving. She's still an active GSP, just a bit easier than a younger GSP like Doozie.

Both Doozie and Ivy are looking forward to their next chapter. You can apply to adopt, support their care as a Rescue Hero, or share their story (the right person might be just a story away).
