Dutch’s Story Is Why Every Dog Owner Needs a Plan
What happens to our dogs when we’re no longer there for them?
It’s a question that lingers quietly in the background, one most of us tuck away. For Dutch, that question stepped out of the shadows and became his world.
Dutch is an 11-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer whose world changed in a heartbeat. The person he’d loved for a lifetime was suddenly gone. With no plan waiting, Dutch landed in a quiet, faraway shelter. He became another gentle soul swept up by fate, adrift in a story he never chose.
When we first met Dutch, we braced ourselves for the slow steps of a senior dog, perhaps a little hesitant, needing time to trust.
But Dutch had a quiet surprise waiting for us.
He greeted us gently, walked beautifully on leash, and quietly showed us who he is. During evaluation day—while younger dogs bounced around in the heat—Dutch made a different choice. He found the shade, settled in, and watched the world with calm confidence.
And then something happened.
When he wanted to play, he did this little dance.
At 11 years old.
That small moment told us everything.
Dutch still wants connection. He still wants adventure. He still wants to be part of someone’s life.
Since making the video, Dutch has undergone surgery to remove a benign mass. He recovered smoothly and is now back to his gentle, playful self. Dutch does not require ongoing medical care, aside from regular check-ups like any senior dog. We’re happy to share that his prognosis is good. We’re optimistic about what comes next and excited for his future.
We’ve also learned he gets along well with other dogs and has been social with everyone he’s met.
Dutch isn’t the first dog we’ve rescued whose owner passed away. Stories like his remind us that loving our dogs also means planning for them.
If you haven’t thought about who would care for your pets if life changed unexpectedly, consider having that conversation.
And if your heart keeps coming back to Dutch…
Maybe this sweet, playful senior still has room in your life.
