Shelters Filled After July 4th—Then We Met Mavis & Mortiz

By midday on July 5, the shelters watched by California GSP Rescue were already overflowing, with more than 150 animals swept in by the aftermath of celebration.
In the midst of this sudden tide, two German Shorthaired Pointers found themselves swept up. Mavis arrived first, slipping quietly into the shelter’s care in the days before the fireworks began. Mortiz, called Mort, followed soon after, limping in with a small wound—perhaps the mark of panic and a desperate dash from the thunder of holiday fireworks.
Though their paths crossed only after the chaos, California GSP Rescue gathered them both, offering each safety together.
Once they were out, their paths began moving at different speeds.
Like many dogs exposed to the stress and close quarters of a shelter, Mavis developed kennel cough. She is improving, but the illness has affected her appetite and made it difficult for her to gain the weight she needs. Until she has fully recovered, she cannot be spayed or begin meeting potential adopters.
Mortiz, on the other hand, has already shaken off his injury and stands ready for what comes next. At five or six years old, he carries the best of the breed—loyalty, intelligence, and warmth—without the boundless energy of a youngster. He still craves adventure, guidance, and affection, but his gentler pace might be the perfect welcome for someone new to German Shorthaired Pointers.
Both Mavis and Mortiz are affectionate, attentive, and hungry for connection. Though rescued side by side, each is now searching for the place—and the people—that will finally feel like home.
