Meet Cowboy — A Gentle Soul Who Deserves to Know What Love Feels Like

Sometimes a dog comes into rescue and you can't help but wonder what he has been through.
Cowboy is one of those dogs.
Cowboy and another GSP, Mash, were first spotted in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box in Compton, devouring leftover food as though they hadn't had a proper meal in days. Somehow, the two boys eventually found themselves in different shelters, and we may never know exactly what happened to them before rescue.
But what we do know about Cowboy is this:
He is an incredibly sweet, affectionate, gentle boy who still believes people are wonderful.
From the moment he arrived safely with California GSP Rescue, Cowboy showed volunteers what a special dog he is. He's people-oriented, playful, curious, and happiest when he's close to someone.
And Cowboy LOVES affection.
Start petting him and you may find him leaning right into you, burying his head against your body and soaking up every bit of attention he can get. It's almost as if he's making up for all the affection he may have missed before coming to rescue.
One volunteer described him simply as:
“A sweet, goofy boy who wants nothing more than pets.”
And honestly, that might be the perfect description of Cowboy.
At 9 years old, Cowboy has reached that wonderful stage where he doesn't feel the need to be in motion every second of the day. He's still playful and enjoys getting out and exploring, but he doesn't appear to need the extreme amount of exercise that some younger GSP’s require.
He's easygoing, curious, responsive, and gentle.
He politely greeted a smaller dog and showed friendly curiosity when meeting another dog through a fence, with no signs of aggression. His interactions with other dogs will continue to be evaluated, but so far, Cowboy has given us plenty of reasons to smile.

Cowboy's Journey
When Cowboy arrived at rescue, he was thin and suffering from skin irritation, clear signs that he hadn't received the care he deserved.
He also has thickened areas and scarring around his legs called hygromas, which can develop when a dog spends extended periods lying on hard surfaces.
Some of those scars may remain.
But Cowboy is no longer lying on hard ground wondering where his next meal will come from.
He's getting good nutrition.
He's getting medical care.
He's getting exercise.
He's getting soft places to rest.
And most importantly, he's getting love.
We don't know much about Cowboy's previous life, so his forever family should be prepared to help him learn and reinforce household routines, basic manners, leash skills, and training as he settles into his new home.
But Cowboy has already shown us something incredibly important:
He is ready to trust again.

His heart says he still wants to be close.
His heart says he still wants to play.
And his heart says he's ready for a second chance.
Cowboy doesn't need someone looking for the youngest, fastest, or most athletic GSP.
He needs someone looking for a good dog.
Someone who will appreciate his gentle nature, enjoy his goofy personality, give him reasonable daily exercise, continue his training, provide soft places to rest, and let him spend his golden years knowing what it feels like to be truly loved.
