Jasmine Is Adopted!

Jasmine a 4 month old adorable female German Shorthaired Pointer Mix was surrendered along with her siblings to the shelter by their owner.

We found Jasmine to be a happy, sweet and loving girl who was all puppy! Being a GSP Mix, she would be much easier to manage than a 4 month old purebred GSP, but just like any young puppy, Jasmine would still need daily walks, stimulation games, playtime and training.

We wanted to find Jasmine a home with someone who was active who would understand her needs, willing to provide exercise and training to create a foundation for her to grow into an amazing adult dog.

Ernesto and his family applied to adopt a young puppy under 2 years old. They hadn’t had a GSP before, however, Ernesto grew up bird hunting with friends and their bird dogs. Also Ernesto and his wife Renae were recently introduced to the breed by a neighbor who has a GSP, and were impressed with her temperament, and wanted to learn more. They didn’t have another dog, but had a cat, so a younger pup would be easier to manage with a cat in the home.

We had some GSP mix puppies, and recommended that they look at a couple of our puppy mixes. They saw two they were interested in, and we set up the appointment for the family to meet them. At the end of the day, they chose Jasmine, and were completely smitten with her.

Jasmine has been a part of the family for a while now, and we wanted to share how she is doing. We couldn’t be happier for this adoption, and all of the progress they have made as a family!

First Day

“Jasmine did really well last night. Drive home was a little rough, she threw up a couple of times but wasn’t crying or barking - just seemed a little uneasy in the car. 

She was very affectionate and comfortable with everyone at home through the evening. Evening meal went well, no problems. She didn’t seem to want to use the bathroom before bed but she did wake us up with crying around 2am, so we took her out then and she went potty. She made it the rest of the night thru this morning with no indoor potty. She hasn’t had a bowel movement yet tho, we assume after this morning’s meal that might come. 

She’s been good with our cat. She hasn’t been chasing him or barking at him at all. She’s been curious and he’s been taking his time to decide to get closer. He has just spent most of his time in another room or on the other side of the room, but even when they’re in the same room there weren’t issues”.

One Week Update 

“She’s doing very well. Really well acclimated to our daily rhythms of potty in the morning, little exercise/training at the park mid-day, little more playtime in the afternoon, usually with our neighbor GSP. She LOVES playing with the older GSP. 

She’s surprisingly lower energy than we expected. We had anticipated a lot more energy with the other GSP’s we know. She’ll often check out of playing and exercise within 15-20 min or so. But that being said, we assume some of it has to do with her comfort/familiarity because she has been gaining energy and willingness to play/exercise over the last 10 days or so.  

She is very sweet and loves cuddling with everyone family and even neighbors visiting at the house. 

She’s had 1 potty accident inside, but that helped us realize her rhythms. She needs a bathroom break within 30-45 min of eating. She’s still reluctant to go outside most times, but last night in fact she actually went to the front door and was whining a bit, telling us she wanted to go out again (even tho we went out for the evening already), but sure enough I took her and she had some more potty to take care of”. 

One Month Update

“Jasmine is doing really well. She’s adjusted well to our home and loves her daily park visits. She absolutely LOVES playing with the dogs who frequent our park. There are 2 GSP’s who are there daily who she loves playing with but honestly, any friendly dog turns into a game of tag quickly! 

Our family is in the park 2-3x a week for one sporting event or another. At first she was a little uncomfortable with all the cheering and loud noises at sporting events for the kids, but since has become the kids biggest fan - even joining along in the cheering with a few barks. Most recently another dog parent made some of these cute dog bandanas which she can be seen in an attached photo sporting during our 12-year old’s most recent game.

We went camping a couple of weekends ago and she absolutely loved the river and hanging on the shore. She’s also been to the beach one time and loved the sand but still a bit apprehensive about the ocean, completely understandable. 

She’s been wonderful with all of our kids and neighbors and especially patient with our 4 year old. She wanted to play with our cat almost immediately but he took a week or so to warm up to her. Now, it’s not uncommon for them to play around the house and the cat still has plenty of “high” places to escape to when he’s done and Jasmine does a good job moving on when the cat is finished playing. 

Our biggest adjustment with Jasmine has been the busyness of our local park. It took her a month or so for it to become familiar to her. There’s a lot of sounds, smells and “activity” happening around the park at all hours of the day, but since that’s where she uses the restroom as well as her daily exercise, the 4-5x daily visits have allowed her to acclimate quickly.

She’s doing well with basic commands like sit, come and “crate” but we still have her on a long, 50’ lead in the park for her safety as she will sometimes see a dog across the park she wants to go play with although she’s progressing in that area as well. She’s also still a puppy so it’s been a full-time duty to make sure she’s chewing the RIGHT toys. I’d like to say no flip-flops were harmed in the process but we’ve lost a pair or so - no biggy!

Lastly, we struggled at first with car rides - she would vomit almost every time, but we’ve found that a doggy crate facing forward seems to do the trick. She still doesn’t love the car but she’s been able to keep food down and travel with us around town and up to Ventura for our most recent camping trip. 

Jasmine has been a wonderful addition to our family and we couldn’t have asked for a better dog for our lifestyle. She’s great with our kids, she’s LOVES sitting in our laps or on the couch with us during downtime and every adventure outside she’s getting more and more comfortable with her new home”.
