Meet Ollie: One Year of Love and Joy

As parents, we hope to give our children the tools to live with compassion and wisdom, to make choices that reflect both heart and reason. For our daughter, Kayla, those lessons began early—at just three years old, she gave our first German Shorthaired Pointer the name Sweetie. Weekends at the Ranch in Bonsall became part of her childhood, where she grew up watching rescue dogs find their forever homes and learning that adoption was more than an act of kindness—it was a promise.

Years later, life looked different. After college, with a demanding work schedule and an active lifestyle alongside her partner, Adam, Kayla made the difficult but thoughtful decision not to bring home a GSP. Yet her heart never let go of the idea of saving a life. Conversations turned to possibilities, and eventually the door opened for a little terrier mix waiting quietly in an overcrowded shelter. His name was Oliver Einstein—Ollie—and the moment they saw him, it was clear he had been waiting for them all along.

This is Ollie’s story.

It's been just over a year since we adopted Oliver Einstein (most commonly known as Ollie for short). Some may say it was love at first sight, yet our love for him has only grown since.

My partner, Adam and I did not take the decision to adopt lightly. Once you adopt, you can’t un-adopt. We understood the deep responsibility and lifelong commitment it entailed. But from the moment we met Ollie, we knew he was our perfect match.

Ollie’s ideal day is full of snuggles, cuddles, and affection. He loves exploring our neighborhood and walking through Downtown Phoenix. He also loves smells. Lots of smells. He is the sweetest, kindest dog we’ve ever met, and we’re so thankful he’s ours.

At home, Ollie loves to curl up with us on the sofa to watch the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks while sporting his matching team bandana. His favorite spot is right between Adam and me, and we’ll often find him shoving his nose, head, and, eventually, his body under the blankets to find the perfect place to burrow, becoming the ultimate blanket (and heart) stealer.

Living in an apartment, we make the most of our space to exercise Ollie between walks. When he's in the mood for playtime, Ollie channels his inner Terrier, chasing plush toys and gently nibbling at their seams. After about 20 throws up and down the stairs, he’s usually ready for a well-deserved belly rub.

It’s hard to believe it’s been over a year since Ollie became part of our family. Adam and I often wonder how we ever “did life” before adopting him. Ollie was the missing puzzle piece to our story, and we can’t wait to spend the rest of his days together, enjoying all the sniffs, belly rubs, and early morning cuddles we can get.

Adopt, don’t shop. Your perfect match, just like our Ollie, is out there waiting for you.
