Nena Takes the Scenic Route

Nena looking for someone to love and that will play fetch

Nena returns with the ball, but not directly. She meanders, savoring the shade, taking a sip of water on an unseasonably warm day, giving us a few extra moments to watch her—this beautiful GSP—simply revel in being alive.

Five years old and brimming with life, Nena is the picture of health and affection. When we learned she was waiting in a shelter, we reached out to Jennifer, a volunteer whose answer was immediate and unwavering. By the next day, Nena was safe in her care, leaving behind the same shelter where Auggie’s story had begun only weeks before.

Jennifer quickly discovered that Nena likes being close to people. During the ride, she leaned forward from the backseat for attention and seemed to settle when offered a reassuring pet. When Jennifer met Greg, they stopped for coffee and lunch. Nena was manageable and responsive, though next time they will give her some exercise first for their next outing.

Back at California GSP Rescue, Nena showed more of her fun side. She liked spending time in the field with Doc, Emily, and the other GSPs and took part in a game of fetch, returning the ball after making a short detour. Volunteer Jim was just as impressed. Having walked her, he said that she was a wonderful dog with a good temperament and one who walked smoothly and enjoyed being noticed.

If you are interested in adopting a German Shorthaired Pointer, then you should consider Nena. She requires a family who are able to give her daily exercise, keep up her training, and set aside some time for affection. The fact that she is five years old doesn't mean that she is any less active.

The video also features Bo, a ten-month-old male GSP. His previous homes couldn't give him the exercise and attention he needed. A normal walk will not suffice for Bo. Although a younger dog might draw more attention, making a good choice means looking beyond age and considering what you can provide each day.
